Mother's Divine Music School in Ganeshpuri opened in May 2010 and is already a great success. Since opening in May 2010, the school has enrolled 35 students under the close supervision of the founder, Shri Prasad Joshi.

The school is named for his mother, who inspired him to cultivate his voice to the level it is today, which he offers at Nityananda's Temple in Ganeshpuri as one of the eight Brahmin priests there. Swamiji speaks of Prasad with great love and respect, and is greatly moved by his providing an avenue for students to express their love of God through music.

There has been such great interest in the school that they have had to turn away more than 20 prospective students in the past three weeks due to limited class size and numbers of instruments. Additional harmoniums and drums are currently needed to make it easier for students to study as well as to get together and practice.  Over 50 students are on the waiting list!

The three tabla (drum) classes, with five students each, meet weekly afternoons. Swamiji says the teacher is "such a good teacher, really an excellent teacher. Not only does he explain things so well and have so much patience, it is so beautiful to watch him listen to them play.  He travels 2-3 hours each way from Mumbai to share his knowledge with students at the school. Tabla is traditionally played by men in India, however there is a young woman now in the program learning alongside the men.  One of the youngest students is barely taller than the drums themselves!"

The harmonium classes meet weekly and have seven instruments for the students.  The students in these classes range from their teens and college years to homemakers handling busy families. Swamiji says "When the mothers start studying the harmonium they bring music into the home. The local children are talking about their moms singing at home, and all the songs are love songs to God".

During her recent visit to India, a young boy came to visit the home where Swamiji was staying.  He came into the kitchen and, with eyes full of joy, said in his halting English, "I am taking tabla."  He then ran out the door.  A couple of minutes later he came back and said, "Thank you."

The school has its own website with photos of the students and interviews with them.  Ashram donors have provided the initial funding and committed enough money every month to pay the two teachers and the manager who organizes all the students class times and practice times (about $400 US per month).

The school is looking for a location of their own so they can move out of the private home where they currently hold class and practice. In addition, they have recently added a third teacher, also from Mumbai, who is teaching classical Indian dance (Bharat Natyam).

Please help us support the continuing classes, and the expansion that is needed:  a new location, more instruments, and more classes for the 50 students on the waiting list!

Your donation of $81 will fund one student for the full year of classes.   Please email Swamiji if you are interested in providing additional support for a new facility ($1,500) and more teachers and instruments ($2,500 - $4,000) so we can serve the 50 students on the waiting list.  Thank you for your generosity.
